Technically speaking of coffee pods describing a block of compressed ground coffee in a two layers coupled by a paper filter. This type of packaging ensures consistent quality coffee to equal mixture due to the uniformity of dosage, grinding and pressing guaranteed by special machines called "cialdatrici".

Although in the market may exist different formats of paper pods, including the 38 mm and 55 mm wrapped in pairs, substantially the size of paper pods adopted by almost all manufacturers of paper pods and their compatible machines is the standard format ESE 44 mm (Easy Serving Espresso).

This standard production said precise geometric dimensioning of the pod and of grammage, (44 mm for the diameter of the block of coffee, 7 grams for the weight per serving) just to allow the compatibility between machines and paper pods of different manufacturers and roasters , in one type of system that precisely because of the peculiarity not to present constraints of exclusivity between consumable (the pod) and the corresponding device (the coffee machine), is defined as "open". This solution of portioning of the coffee gives it benefits also from the environmental point of view because the pod once used can be safely disposed because consists of only organic materials such as paper filter and coffee grounds. The paper pods are individually packed in a protective atmosphere to prevent damage to the product and promote the conservation of the aromas from the oxidation process of coffee if left in contact with the oxygen content in the air. Given the smaller volumetric bulk developed by paper pods compared to the capsules, usually the packaging of boxes for vending regular blends (mixtures Classic longer marketed) is carried out for a number of not less than 100 pieces in the box.
